Atrium Linear Stairs

Using a variety of spatial models, a number of different Atrium typologies were developed for the four new buildings of the IT Innovation Center in Kaiseraugst. Each of the buildings is characterised by different building parameters adapted to the atrium. The open spaces were developed based on changing ceiling sections. The floors open onto the atrium and blend into the open space in a number of complex manners. Light passes through the generous glazing in the attic. The arrangement of the central, vertical development, lifts and stairs in the atrium connects visual relationships with direct movement between the floors and the building as a whole.

Type.254.Staggered openings

Varying ceiling openings are aligned with each other. Meeting rooms and open communication zones are arranged in such a manner that the lifts and the third necessary staircase that open up to the atrium are visible, and take a direct path to the atrium.

Type.255.Spirale

A single staircase connects all floors with one another, and in doing so it twists 90 degrees from one floor and completes a full rotation from the ground floor to the fourth floor. The stairs connect all upstairs open meeting areas. Meeting rooms are arranged at right angles that provide an unobstructed view into the atrium. By rotating each arrangement by 90 degrees, each floor has a different ceiling section.

Type.256.Tango

The open space for communication areas is located on one floor and the meetings rooms are placed opposite. The arrangement is mirrored on the next level, so that a "back and forth" movement arises. Open communication areas are connected by the freely-suspended stairs in the open space. The generous width of some of the stairs can turn these into social areas.

Type.257.Linear stairs

The stairs in the smallest building are arranged perpendicular to the longitudinal side of the building. Two stairs are all that's needed to reach the room width and extend onto the open communication zones with stadium-style seating steps. The remaining connecting stairs provide a contrast with their lightweight, open wooden staircase that provide access to higher floors. The varying stair widths create a moving space between the linear, staggered stairs.
